You are invited to an important event that can help us build student success, strengthen the First Year programs, and contribute to the alignment of Academic & Student Affairs. The Making Connections Symposium on the First Year Experience, set for Friday February 10, 9:00-1:00, in the Little Theater, will include:
* A keynote presentation from a Virginia Tech team that leads an award-winning FYE program across the university's seven undergraduate colleges, from Architecture and Urban Studies to Engineering, Natural Resources, Business, and Liberal Arts.
* Breakout sessions will examine FYE programs at a set of CUNY colleges, including an innovative program at Queensborough Community College that has attracted national acclaim.
This Symposium addresses two of President Mellow's key initiatives for LaGuardia: our effort to improve graduation; and the focus on improving alignment between Academic and Student Affairs. Strengthening our First Year programs is crucial to both. First Year is a key site for integrating advisement and instruction; launching ePortfolio as a learning and advisement process; and helping students to chart plans and establish the habits of success. The Symposium is an opportunity to advance our thinking about First Year by engaging with leaders in the field.
The Symposium is sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning and LaGuardia's Making Connections National Resource Center. Virginia Tech, Queensborough and all of campuses involved are partnered with LaGuardia in Making Connections programs funded by the US Department of Education. The Symposium is open to all LaGuardia faculty & staff, and to teams from our Making Connections partners.
Please put February 10 on your calendar.
